Wavelength announced as 2019 Legal Engineering Partner to LawWithoutWalls

Wavelength announced as 2019 Legal Engineering Partner to LawWithoutWalls

By Joseph White, Legal Data Analyst at Wavelength.law

Wavelength is excited to be supporting LawWithoutWalls once again. This is our second year in a row as the Legal Engineering partner for the hugely successful international programme, which operates globally and is run out of the University of Miami.

The programme is designed to get the new generation of lawyers and business people thinking deeply about technological innovation in the legal space, and to involve them in practical collaborative problem-solving, whilst aiming to challenge the traditional limitations of legal education and services with an innovative, multi-disciplinary and tech-driven outlook.

Each year, LawWithoutWalls brings together around 100 students from over 35 law and business schools around the world. Sponsored by a corporate legal department, law company or law firm, four law and business professionals (the ‘mentors’) will team up with students (the ‘hackers’) from different schools and countries to work together on creating a solution to a real-world legal problem. After 16 weeks of work, the teams will head to ConPosium in balmy Miami to deliver a presentation on their solution to a live audience and panel of judges, with various prizes awarded for achievements such as the best idea, best presentation or best business case. In our view, the key to LawWithoutWalls’ success is its diversity, bringing together participants and sponsors from across the globe, and drawing on many different areas of expertise to improve how people interact with the law (sounds familiar…that’s basically a legal engineering approach to the world!).

Some of our favourite projects from last year included ‘Weaver’ (sponsored by Miami Law) an e-marketplace and matching service for victims of natural disaster and contractors to help rebuild their Homes (this solution was judged by our CEO, Peter Lee and went on to win the ‘Best Idea’ prize) and ‘Satori’ (sponsored by Pinsent Masons) which used a trained AI to assist with risk assessments and make the contract review process more efficient.

This year’s iteration of LawWithoutWalls will be kicking off today at IE University in Segovia, Spain – teams, roles and topic challenges will be announced, and participants will spend two days of intense creative collaboration, idea generation and team building together (no phones allowed!). Wavelength will be supporting the teams’ legal engineering effort throughout, Felix Schulte-Strathaus from our team is the LawWithoutWalls Legal Technology Officer, and we will be posting regular updates on the programme’s progression, so keep watching this space or subscribe to our blog to be the first to receive all of our latest content.
